Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock)
The annual festival of Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is usually held during the Buddhist pilgrimage season from November to March. This period attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists from across Myanmar and around the world. The most important celebrations take place during the full moon days of the Burmese months of Nadaw, Pyatho, and Tabodwe, which generally fall between December and February. During the festival, devotees climb the mountain to offer prayers, light candles, donate gold leaves to the Golden Rock, and participate in religious ceremonies. The atmosphere is vibrant and spiritual, making it one of the most significant Buddhist festivals in Myanmar.
History of kyaiktiyo Pagoda
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, commonly known as the Golden Rock, has a long history and is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Myanmar. According to local tradition, the pagoda was built more than 2,500 years ago during the lifetime of the Buddha.
Legend says that a hermit named Taik Tha received a strand of the Buddha’s hair. Before he died, he gave the sacred hair to King Tissa and asked him to place it inside a rock shaped like the hermit’s head. With the help of celestial beings, the king found a suitable boulder and enshrined the Buddha’s hair inside it. The rock was then placed on the edge of Mount Kyaiktiyo, where it remains balanced today.
Over the centuries, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda became an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Devotees from all parts of Myanmar visit the pagoda to pray, make offerings, and apply gold leaves to the rock. Today, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is not only a symbol of faith and devotion but also an important cultural and historical landmark of Mon State.

During these months, the weather is cool and pleasant, making it the ideal time for pilgrimage and sightseeing. The site is especially crowded during weekends, public holidays, and religious festivals. Many visitors prefer to come early in the morning to watch the sunrise or in the evening to enjoy the beautiful sunset and illuminated views of the pagoda. As one of Myanmar’s most sacred Buddhist sites, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda remains a popular destination throughout the year, but the peak tourist season is from November to February.
